F.A.Q.

What can I expect?

Acupuncture rebalances the body's vital energy by applying heat or very slender, solid needles, about the width of a human hair, to specific points along the body's energy pathways. People receiving acupuncture frequently notice increased relaxation, less pain, enhanced mood, improved energy or a sense of well-being. These are all signs of better energy balance.

What are treatments like?

The first few visits last one to one and a half hours involving a discussion of your reasons for seeking treatment, your health and life history, a physical examination, and your treatment. Subsequent visits last 45 minutes to an hour.

Does Acupuncture Hurt?

Patients experience the sensation of acupuncture in varying ways. There are different styles of needling. I use a Japanese style of needling which says to "gently insert the needle under the skin, and let the Qi rise to the needle". Acupuncture needles are very slender, solid needles. Patients describe their sensations as either nothing at all, warm, tingling, or a momentary ache or sting, like a bug bite. I take great care to make my patients very comfortable so that they relax whil the needles are in place. If there is any discomfort, I adjust the needle so that it disappears quickly. At times I will use heat or acupressure during treatment in place of needling. People receiving acupuncture frequently notice deep relaxation and may fall asleep during treatment.

Will acupuncture interfere with any treatment programs I am currently following?

Acupuncture is an ideal complimentary treatment since it can be used with any other form of health care or medication. Over time, acupuncture can even reduce a patient's need for certain medications and therapies. However, never go off a medication or therapy without first consulting with your physician or other health care provider.

How much does treatment cost?

Initial visit (1.5 hr): $145
Follow-up treatments (1 hr): $85

Do you accept insurance?

Many insurance companies reimburse for acupuncture treatments. I will provide you with a receipt following each treatment, allowing you to directly file a claim with your insurance provider.

How frequently should I receive acupuncture treatments?

Acupuncture treatment has a cumulative effect. Initially treatments are once a week until your body begins to maintain the desired balance. After this, treatments may continue weekly, every other week, or monthly, depending on the individual's health needs. Some people eventually have just a seasonal "tune-up" 4 to 5 times per year.

How soon will I feel healthy again?

On average, it takes 4-6 treatments for a patient to start feeling better. However, a patient with more acute symptoms may notice improvement after just one acupuncture session. Patients with chronic symptoms may take longer to see significant improvement.

I am currently healthy. How will acupuncture help me?

In addition to easing a patient's current symptoms, acupuncture is best used as a preventative health care. By rebalancing the body's energy before symptoms arise, acupuncture can reduce the frequency and severity of illness. Acupuncture frequently has the following effects in symptom-less patients:

  • Strengthened immune system
  • Increased relaxation
  • Improved sleep
  • Enhanced mood
  • Greater energy in daily tasks
  • Better sense of well-being

What should I wear?

Loose and comfortable clothing is best. Be sure that your sleeves and pant legs can be rolled up over your elbows and knees.
